Learn a card game with neighbours

Ruth Campbell

I'd like to invite two neighbours for one new card game and tea. We can agree a finish time and take turns explaining the rules. I enjoy company very much; I also enjoy knowing when I can put my slippers back on.

Do you need to learn the whole card game on the first visit?

I'd rather learn enough to play a slow first round. We can look up a rule when it matters. A neighbourly afternoon should survive a little uncertainty, and possibly my arithmetic.

I would enjoy talking about the attempts afterwards. I am not sure about joining the activity itself. I need to allow for this: I work some weekends.

I would like room to change the arrangement after the first attempt. I want to keep “Learn a card game with neighbours” manageable for the people involved. That is a useful distinction. A conversation afterwards can be its own invitation, without requiring someone to take part in everything.

For this wish, Ruth Campbell: I would also like to learn to explain a game without a long rules lecture. For me, I work some weekends. I work as a bookkeeper, and I work some weekends. The help I would welcome is someone with practical experience. I am trying to leave enough room for the ordinary parts of the week, so I would rather compare one modest attempt than agree to a bigger commitment before I know it fits.

With character writing, I tend to notice how much preparation sits behind the nice result. What would you leave out here?

I do not think “Learn a card game with neighbours” needs to grow before it is worth trying. I would welcome a small practical suggestion and keep the extra possibilities for later.

I like that this stayed small. My temptation would be to add three more things before starting. I would also like to learn to explain a game without a long rules lecture.

For this wish, Kırat Manço: I would keep the extra ideas somewhere separate. One manageable attempt gives the bigger ideas something to learn from.
