Find a workable first step for listening journals

Leigh Thompson

The ambition is to plan a quiet listening walk with a friend. I need to plan around this: I share my free time with family responsibilities.

The sound walks part caught my attention. The idea is lovely. The preparation sounds less lovely. Who handles that?

I should name the preparation jobs before asking anyone to join. Shared time should include the clearing away too. This is why I am keeping the plan modest: I share my free time with family responsibilities.

That is the part people forget. I would rather have fewer activities and shared cleanup. I would enjoy talking about the attempts afterwards. I am not sure about joining the activity itself. That is how I see “Find a workable first step for listening journals”.

That is useful feedback, even if we would choose differently. With listening journals, I am returning after a break. That is a useful distinction. A conversation afterwards can be its own invitation, without requiring someone to take part in everything.

I would also like to make a short sound diary of changing weather. I have tried making a little space for sound walks; the difficult part was keeping the session small enough to repeat. I work as a university student, and I prefer quieter places and smaller groups. The help I would welcome is a welcoming local recommendation. I am trying to leave enough room for the ordinary parts of the week, so I would rather compare one modest attempt than agree to a bigger commitment before I know it fits.

That gives us two related aims to compare. I would like to plan a quiet listening walk with a friend. I need to allow for this: I share my free time with family responsibilities.

For sound walks, I would rather agree a small beginning than promise a long programme. Would that approach suit this wish?

I would protect the time together in “Find a workable first step for listening journals”. The exact result matters less to me than an arrangement people can enjoy without pressure.

I like that this stayed small. My temptation would be to add three more things before starting. I would also like to make a short sound diary of changing weather.

Tsuma Gachanja, I would keep the extra ideas somewhere separate. One manageable attempt gives the bigger ideas something to learn from. The help I would value is a welcoming local recommendation.
