One short attempt, then a decision about whether to repeat it. I do not want to announce a regular commitment before trying it. One thing I should say upfront: I need plans with a clear start and finish.

For this wish, Annalise Butler: I might just watch the first time. I do not want an invitation that turns into pressure once I arrive. I need to allow for this: I rely on public transport for most outings.

I do not need everyone to choose the same version. With rowing, I am comfortable with the basics. Then watching needs to remain an option throughout. I should make the invitation match that, rather than say it only to get someone through the door.

I would also like to plan a gentle return to regular training. For me, I rely on public transport for most outings.

That gives us two related aims to compare. I would like to finish a local 5 km at a comfortable pace. My plan has to fit this: I need plans with a clear start and finish.

I keep thinking about your plan to finish a local 5 km at a comfortable pace. Would a brief first attempt tell you more than another round of planning?

“Finish a local 5 km at a comfortable pace” is the starting point, not a promise of a perfect result. I would ask what would make one attempt possible and listen to the answer.

I'd try that, Annalise Butler.

That is enough. I can come back with a clearer arrangement and let people decide then, rather than treat interest as attendance. The help I would value is a realistic weekly plan.
