That is the version I want. We can agree a modest first attempt without measuring everyone against the most experienced person. This is why I am keeping the plan modest: I prefer quieter places and smaller groups.

I could be interested in that. I am less interested in a disguised competition. I would enjoy talking about the attempts afterwards. I am not sure about joining the activity itself.

That is useful feedback, even if we would choose differently. With cycling, I am returning after a break. That is a useful distinction. A conversation afterwards can be its own invitation, without requiring someone to take part in everything.

I would also like to build a consistent swimming routine. I have tried making a little space for cycling; the difficult part was keeping the session small enough to repeat.

That gives us two related aims to compare. I would like to find a welcoming recreational team. I cannot ignore the fact that I prefer quieter places and smaller groups.

I would welcome a patient training partner. Is there something comparably small that another person could offer you? That is how I see “Find a workable first step for cycling”.

I would keep “Find a workable first step for cycling” as one small invitation. A different version of a related wish could teach us something without either of us copying the other's whole plan.

I like that this stayed small. My temptation would be to add three more things before starting. I would also like to build a consistent swimming routine.

I would keep the extra ideas somewhere separate. One manageable attempt gives the bigger ideas something to learn from. The help I would value is someone who enjoys a relaxed pace.
