I would ask what they need before saying the plan works for them. If I cannot make it suitable, I should say that plainly. I need to allow for this: my work rota changes from week to week. That is how I see “Find a workable first step for insect observation”.

I like the idea, but I cannot promise to turn up. Can I stay in the conversation without saying yes? The practical limit is that I work some weekends.

I do not need everyone to choose the same version. With insect observation, I am experienced but still curious. Yes. Staying curious is enough for now. I would rather have an honest maybe than a yes that makes someone uncomfortable.

I would also like to learn to photograph plants without disturbing them. For me, I work some weekends.

That gives us two related aims to compare. I would like to keep a simple seasonal nature notebook. My work rota changes from week to week.

My own aim is to learn to photograph plants without disturbing them. Which part of your plan could we compare without assuming they are the same activity?

I would keep the main wish in view: find a workable first step for insect observation. A suggestion is useful if it helps that first attempt, rather than adding another project. That is how I see “Find a workable first step for insect observation”.

Could the next update include the awkward bits as well as what went well? I would also like to learn to photograph plants without disturbing them.

On “Find a workable first step for insect observation”, yes. I want to keep track of what was workable, what took more effort than expected and what I would leave out next time. The help I would value is someone who enjoys stopping to look closely.
